Can A Biblical Christian Be A Democrat?

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

Can a person be a Biblical Christian and vote for a mainline democrat? Can a Biblical Christian espouse the ideologies of today's democratic party?

When my grandmother was alive the Democratic party was very different than it is today. Back then, when she was young, the democrats were primarily known for fiscal responsibility, effective foreign-policy, and help for the poor. Today, the Democratic party is known for their unapologetic and enthusiastic support of Planned Parenthood and the LGBTQ movement.

These days, politicians who call themselves “Democrats” rejoice over the legalization of the same-sex marriage (June 2015) and they’re unashamedly devoted to a pro-abortion position.

It is no secret that the Bible teaches life begins at conception, (Psalm 139, Jeremiah 1:5, Luke 1:41) and that the devil promotes murder. (John 8:44). Also, it is no secret that the Bible teaches sodomy is sin not a civil right. (Leviticus 20:13, 1 Cor. 6, Romans 1:18-32)

Further, it is no secret that Jesus taught marriage was between one man and one woman. (Matthew 19:4-6)

Interestingly, well-known Democrat leaders, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, previously agreed with Jesus that marriage is between one man and one woman exclusively, but both Democratic leaders have changed their positions for political reasons over the last 12 years. A quick search on YouTube and a person can find archived videos of both Hillary Clinton and former President Obama explaining that they are against homosexual marriage, but they both have changed their positions to more adequately appeal to the “progressive” agenda.

In May of 2012, then Vice President now President, Joe Biden, also changed his view on same-sex marriage, and he explained his new-found acceptance to a Meet the Press reporter on NBC.

Unfortunately, there are many Americans who refer to themselves as "Christian Democrats." Some may be new Christians, recently converted to Christ, and therefore are not aware of the Bible's teaching. Others may have been a Christian for sometime but are simply untaught; possibly attending a "church" that is heavy on entertainment and light on biblical explanation and application.

Maybe some “Christian Democrats” are fully aware of the Bible's teaching on these moral issues yet reject the biblical teaching, and therefore are not true Christians at all. To defiantly reject the Bible’s teaching is not the act of a sincere follower of Christ. There are many goats among the sheep. (Matt 25:31-46)

Based on the ideologies of today’s average democrat, a "Christian Democrat" is an oxymoron.

Biblical Christians understand that our vote and political allegiance should not be primarily Republican nor Democrat, but it should be with "Thus saith the Lord."

Biblical Christians understand that it's naïve to think that we are just one election away from national revival, but we are wise to consider the words of the Psalmist to Israel, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” (Psalm 33:12)

Your co-worker who votes democrat, your neighbor or loved one who identify themselves as a Democrat are not the Christian’s enemy, but they are our mission field. And, by the way, so are the Republicans you work with, live by, and love. Just because a person claims to be a “a conservative Republican” does not mean they’re a Christian.

Political parties change, but our immutable God never changes and His Word is forever settled. We have hope not in political systems, but in our loving Heavenly Father Who watches over the affairs of men.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER (Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or Unaffiliated) believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

God offers His gracious gospel to all sinners, no matter how they’re politically affiliated.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31)

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-13)
